HANNIBAL, Mo. -- An off-duty Hannibal police officer was injured when he intervened in a disturbance at Wal-Mart Supercenter Wednesday night.
The officer repeatedly was struck by the man who initiated the disturbance before the officer and a citizen eventually subdued the man.
Wesley J. Hobson, 43, of Hannibal, was arrested on numerous charges including peace disturbance, resisting arrest, and multiple charges of assault on a law enforcement officer.
The incident started when a man made threats toward a Wal-Mart employee and refused to leave the store despite being ordered by store employees. The off-duty officeer saw the incident, intervened, displayed his badge and ordered the man out of the store.
Numerous attempts were then made to get the man out of the store and into custody. The man hit, pushed, swung at and struck the officer numerous times in the face, ran out of the store and got into a vehicle parked in a fire lane. The officer, with the aid of a citizen, subdued the man and held him for on-duty police officers to arrive.
The officer sustained injuries to his face and lip.
Hobson is lodged in the Marion County Jail.
