Southeastern downs Illini West for 30th victory

Southeastern reached the 30-win mark in volleyball for the first time since 2002 with a 25-19, 26-24 West Central Conference victory over Illini West Thursday night at Carthage.

It's the fourth time in school history the Lady Suns have won 30 matches. Southeastern, now 30-4 on the season, was led by Sheena Flesner with 11 kills and Mallary Owen with 21.

Danielle Gronewold and Mackenzie Carroll had five kills apiece for the Chargers, while Megan Harkey added 11 assists and seven service points.

Boonville d. Hannibal: The Lady Pirates fell into a first-place tie in the North Central Missouri Conference with a 25-17, 25-21 loss at Korf Gym.

Lacey Hagen led Hannibal (18-7, 6-1) with eight kills, while Kelsey St. Clair had seven digs and Ashley Treaster added eight assists. Boonville is also 6-1 in the NCMC.

West Prairie d. West Hancock: The Titans lost a non-conference match 25-17, 25-13 at Sciota.

Marley Hall led West Hancock (20-15) with nine kills, while Halie Schilson finished with eight digs. Becca Elschlager served three aces.

Beardstown d. Brown County: The Lady Hornets battled the Lady Tigers through three games before falling 27-25, 27-29, 25-22 at Mount Sterling.

Carol Dunlap led Brown County (7-15) with 15 kills, while Sam Kassing gave out 33 assists an Erika Gregory had 11 digs.

GIRLS TENNIS

Illinois state tournament:  Quincy High School’s Samantha Halfpap went 1-2, while the Blue Devils’ double team of Jenny Hill and Kelsey O’Donnell lost both of its matches on the first day of competition.

After opening with a straight set loss to Crystal Lake Central’s Nelle Youel, Halfpap beat Lincoln Way North’s Selena Smith 6-3, 6-0. Kankakee’s Charisma King eliminated Halfpap with a straight sets win.

Hill and O’Donnnell fell 6-0, 6-0 to Hinsdale South’s Helen Alex and Kim Warpecha. Bloomington’s Heidi Mott and Melissa Carr handed the QHS team a 6-2 6-1 loss in the consolation draw.

GIRLS SWIMMING

O'Fallon 101, QHS 75: A strong start didn't stand up for the Blue Devils in a dual loss at Sheridan Swim Club.

QHS won the first four events of the meet, including a victory from Sadie Rhoades, Anne Marie Christensen, Allie Russell and Kristin Dreasler, who swam the 200-yard medley relay in 2 minutes, 1.33 seconds.

Rhoades also won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Christensen won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Russell won the 50 freestyle.

Russell, Christensen and Rhoades teamed up with Jordan Goodwin to win the 400 freestyle in 4:05.97.

BOYS SOCCER

Hannibal 3, Marshall 2: Jake Stamp scored off an assist from Elliot Meyer midway through the first overtime to give the Pirates an NCMC victory.

Hannibal scored first in the game on a goal from Tyler White. After the Owls tied the score, Meyer hooked up with Stamp in the 50th minute for the first of two goals in the game.
