QHS senior plays leading role as Blue Devils score victory

Senior Macy Ferguson-Smith had career highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Quincy High School girls basketball team to a 50-37 home victory Saturday over Chatham Glenwood.

Smith had three key free throws in the final two minutes to help QHS (2-8) pull away after Glenwood cut the lead to six points.

"She went from a role player to a lead player," QHS coach Sandi DeVoe said of Smith, the only senior who played Saturday. "She stepped up and did a tremendous job."

After having two home games canceled last week because of weather, QHS started strong and outscored Glenwood 17-9 in the second quarter to take a 29-16 hafltime lead.

Freshman Tori Kuhn had 13 points and eight rebounds for QHS, which had its second-highest scoring game of the season.

Allie Hogan led Glenwood with 21 points. Glenwood missed 13 3-point attempts in the second half.

QND 89, Lincoln 44: The Lady Raiders aren't giving coach Eric Orne any need for halftime adjustments. Karlee Gengenbacher scored the game's first eight points and the Lady Raiders scored 49 points by halftime at The Pit.

"That's something that has been consistent the last four games," Orne said of his team's fast start.

QND scored 28 points in the first quarter and owned a 24-point lead by halftime. Chloe Barnes led the Lady Raiders with 25 points, while Gengenbacher finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Greenfield 59, Brown County 41: The Hornets made just 10 of 31 free throws, stalling their comeback from a nine-point first-half deficit. Ellen Chaney had 10 points for Brown County (2-7), while Sam Kassing had nine.

South Fulton 54, Unity 41: The Lady Mustangs were held to single digits in the first and third quarters, resulting in a road loss. Rachel Rush led Unity (2-10) with 16 points.

Rushville-Industry 51, Western 11: Nicole Bordewick scored all 11 points for the Wildcats, who managed just four points in the second half.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pittsfield 75, North Greene 57: Kyle Harris scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter as the Saukees extended a 12-point halftime lead to 19 and won on the road.

Harris buried two 3-pointers in the third quarter as Pittsfield scored 25 points in the frame. Craig Cooley added 16 points and Jordan Cawthon had 12 for the Saukees (9-0).

Brown County 80, Greenfield 64: The Hornets scored 25 points in the first quarter, but nearly allowed the Tigers back in the game before halftime. Greenfield scored 26 points in the second quarter to pull within eight points.

However, Greenfield couldn't draw any closer.

Ace Henricks led Brown County with 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists while Jacob Wilson scored a game-high 22 points.

Liberty 49, Central 35: The Eagles made 12 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter to make a 10-point lead last on the road. Brian Terstriep led Liberty (5-3) with 12 points, hitting 6 of 8 free throws overall and four in a row in the fourth quarter. Blake Barry added 10.

Mike Hall and Drew Miller led Central (3-5) with 11 points apiece.

West Hancock 46, Clark County 36: The Titans picked up a non-conference victory at Warsaw. Caleb Gray scored 13 points and Ryan Runge had 12 for West Hancock (6-1). Michael Brennan led Clark County with 12 points.

Bowling Green 50, Highland 44: Despite holding the Bobcats to five points in the second quarter, the Cougars were never able to climb out of a six-point first quarter deficit.

Kyle Ellison led Highland (2-6) with 17 points. Adam Morrall and Christian Dade each added eight.

PREP WRESTLING

Mascoutah Invitational: Quincy seniors Nick DeVine (130) and Justin Orebaugh (215) finished second in their respective classes as the Blue Devils took 10th in the 16-team event.

James Leffew placed third at 160, and Brady Sloup finished sixth at 112.

Rock Bridge Tournament of Champions: Hannibal had three wrestlers -- Bryant Ruby at 125, Jacob Janes at 135 and Phillip Perry at 152 -- go 6-0 and finish first. Kyle Wessel took third at 130 and Blake Morton fourth at 140.
