Area Roundup: Trail Blazers see chance to pull off upset on road slip away

The John Wood Community College men's basketball team nearly pulled off an upset Friday night, falling to Southeastern 65-63 in the Southeastern Classic at West Burlington, Iowa.

Southeastern is 5-0 and ranked No. 14 in NJCAA Division I.

The Trail Blazers had the ball with 3.8 seconds left, but Jurgen Lico missed a shot at the buzzer.

After leading by five points with four minutes to play, JWCC trailed by one point with a chance to take the lead. Brylin Brown missed a 12-foot jumper with seven seconds left. The Trail Blazers then fouled the Blackhawks, who made a free throw for a two-point lead.

Brown scored 23 points to lead JWCC (3-1), while Ryan Stuckman added 10. The Trail Blazers play Black Hawk at 5 p.m. today.

Mount Mercy 77, C-SC 69: The Mustangs led nearly the entire second half in a non-conference game at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

C-SC tied the score 50-50 when Jason Gillespie drained a 3-pointer with 13:24 left in the second half. Mount Mercy (4-0) answered with a 9-2 run to take a 59-52 lead with 9:44 left.

Gillespie scored a team-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers, while Curt Hayward finished with 15 points for C-SC (1-2).

York 81, HLG 73: The Trojans lost their first game at the Cattle Classic in Seward, Neb. Brock Webber had 26 points, while Josh Boswell added 17 and Brian Gilbert had 14 for the Trojans (2-2), who play tournament host Concordia at 1 p.m today.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

JWCC 65, Lake County 45: Jessica Walter had 13 points and six rebounds to lead the Lady Blazers to a win in the Microtel/Lady Blazers Shootout at the Student Activity Center.

JWCC built an early lead and extended it to 36-22 by halftime. The Lady Blazers forced the Lancers (1-1) to make 39 turnovers.

Devin Wombles and Hillary Held added 10 points apiece for JWCC (2-2). The Lady Blazers host Milwaukee Area Technical at 4 p.m. today.
