C-SC AT WILLIAM JEWELL
When: 1 p.m. Saturday
Where: Greene Stadium, Liberty, Mo.
Records: Culver-Stockton — 0-8 (0-8 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference). William Jewell — 0-8 (0-8 HAAC).
Coaches: Culver-Stockton — Christian Guenther (7-44 at Culver-Stockton, fifth season; overall, same). William Jewell — Fran Schwenk (21-28 at William Jewell, fifth season; 141-111-3 overall, 40th season).
Last meeting: Oct. 11, 2008 - William Jewell 23, Culver-Stockton 16. The Wildcats came close to a win at Poulton Stadium as Dustin Jacoby threw for two touchdowns and 283 yards. The Cardinals were able to run out the final three minutes of the game after a C-SC drive stalled at the Jewell 30-yard line in the fourth quarter.
All-time series: William Jewell leads 47-13.
As the fans see it: According to those registered for the "Are You Smarter Than The Sports Guys?" contest, 50 percent favor Culver-Stockton.
It's happened before: The Wildcats' only win during Guenther's watch came at William Jewell on Sept. 24, 2005 when C-SC walked away with a 34-10 victory. Since that win, C-SC has lost 24 straight road games.
The Wildcats are looking for their first victory of any kind since a 23-20 win over Evangel on Oct. 20, 2007. C-SC has lost 22 straight games, 21 of those coming inside the HAAC.
Finding its groove: Since making a switch at running back three weeks ago, the C-SC offense has found a bit of a groove. Freshman Justin Hubbard has rushed for 228 yards in three starts. C-SC has more than doubled its rushing output per game (159.7 yards to 77.8 yards) since Hubbard joined the lineup.
The improved rushing attack has led to more scoring chances for the Wildcats. C-SC has boosted its scoring average to 11.1 points per game. Kicker Will Ryan set a personal best last week with three field goals in the 20-15 loss to Graceland.
Final meetings: Guenther and Schwenk came into HAAC at the same time and they'll leave at the same time. Last month, Guenther announced his plans to resign after the season. A few weeks later, Schwenk said this would be his last season at William Jewell. This is the first of two straight games for C-SC against teams who will lose their current coach at the end of the season.
C-SC will finish the 2009 season with a home game next week against Evangel. Scott Metcalf, who has been Evangel's coach for the last eight seasons, announced late last month that he was going to resign after the season.
