Hannibal-LaGrange College senior Kevin Zimmerman capped his soccer career in style. The forward from Cancun, Mexico, was named the American Midwest Conference Player of the Year in a vote of league coaches.
A three-time All-AMC first-team selection, Zimmerman had eight goals and 13 assists this fall for the Trojans (10-8-1). His assist total was tops in the eight-team league.
This is the second time that Zimmerman has won an AMC honor. He was the league's Freshman of the Year in 2006. He finished his HLG career with 39 goals and 32 assists.
Freshman Dustin Freitag was shared the AMC Freshman of the Year award. The forward from Frankfurt, Germany, led the Trojans with 13 goals and added six assists.
Zimmerman and Freitag were joined on the first-team All-AMC squad by sophomore midfielder Albert Perez-Borrachero of Madrid, Spain and senior defender Emilio Penuelas of Cartagena, Spain.
More honors for Lady Hawks: The honors continue to roll for members of the Quincy University women's soccer team. Senior Jenna Boyko was named the Midwest Region Player of the Year by Daktronics.
She scored 11 goals and helped the Lady Hawks to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She was the Lady Hawks' lone first-team all-region pick. Defender Meghan Roberts, midfielder Aimee Ubriaco and keeper Toni Eye were second-team picks.
Busy weekend for C-SC hoops: The Culver-Stockton College men's basketball team will welcome some of the NAIA's best teams to Canton, Mo., this weekend for the Culver-Stockton Classic.
Columbia College, which was the runner-up in last year's NAIA Division I tournament, is the marquee team. The Cougars were ranked No. 19 in the NAIA preseason poll. However, they're off to a 2-3 start this season. Former John Wood Community College star Reo Quarles, a junior forward has seen action as a reserve in four games and is averaging 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
C-SC (1-2) will get its shot at Columbia at 3 p.m. Saturday in the final game of the classic. Missouri Baptist (2-4) and Ashford (4-3) round out the field. C-SC plays Missouri Baptist tonight at 7.
QU bringing cross country back: Quincy University is reviving its cross country program. QU Athletic Director Marty Bell hopes to have 10 runners on the men's and women's teams with the hopes of starting a schedule next fall.
The school has been without cross country since 1996. Bell is still looking for a coach to lead the programs.
Feyerabend helps Greenville: Quincy High School product Katelin Feyerabend helped Greenville College take second at the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament last weekend.
Feyerabend had 21 kills in the title match, a five-game loss to Webster. She was named to the all-tournament team. A 6-foot opposite hitter, the junior led Greenville (18-12, 12-4 SLIAC) with 148 kills and was fourth on the team with 214 digs.
This 'n that: HLG senior middle hitter Jessica Curry was the lone Lady Trojan named to the AMC all-league team pick. She was a first-team selection after leading HLG (17-19) with 135 kills. ... QU freshman Lyndsay Kooi was a third-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference pick. She led the Lady Hawks (7-21) with 824 assists.
