Area Roundup: HLG proves it can win anywhere

A change in venues didn't bother the Hannibal-LaGrange men's basketball team.

Condensation at Porter Gym forced the Trojans to play their season opener against Culver-Stockton College at Hannibal High School's Korf Gym. HLG jumped out to a double-digit lead late in the first half and pulled away for a 65-48 victory.

The Trojans, who led 34-20 at halftime, shot 42.9 percent (27 of 63) from the floor and committed only 12 turnovers. Brock Webber led HLG with 16 points, while Gerrell Wells came off the bench to score 12.

Brian Gilbert had 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Cody Stoneburner -- playing his first game at HLG after transferring from Quincy University -- grabbed 11 rebounds.

Phil Peugh led the Wildcats with 16 points, while Jordan Ayers had eight rebounds.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

C-SC 54, Stephens 49: The Lady Wildcats opened their season with a non-conference win at Columbia, Mo. Jamai Letcher led C-SC with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while April Dowell added 15 points and six rebounds.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

C-SC d. Avila: Kayla Duncan had 11 kills and 17 digs to lead the Lady Wildcats to a 25-12, 25-16, 25-13 victory in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at home.

Kallie Sinkus finished with 19 digs for C-SC (14-24, 3-7), while Brittany Koetters added 11 digs and 32 assists.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Central Methodist 2, C-SC 0: The Eagles scored a goal in each half to win the HAAC game in the Lady Wildcats' season finale at Fayette, Mo. C-SC (3-15, 0-9) was outshot 20-5. Danielle Blevins had the Lady Wildcats' only two shots on goal.

MEN'S SOCCER

Central Methodist 7, C-SC 1: The Wildcats' season came to an end with an HAAC loss on the road. C-SC (1-15, 0-9) scored first on a penalty kick by Zach Pedrotti. The Wildcats trailed 4-1 at halftime and were outshot 32-11.
