GALESBURG -- Galesburg High School coaches fretted about Quincy's big-play ability.

It was the Blue Devils who should have been worried.

It took Galesburg two plays to exert its dominance over its Western Big Six Conference rival in the Silver Streaks' 28-13 homecoming victory on Friday at C.C. Van Dyke Field.

The first two Galesburg (3-3, 2-1 WB6) offensive plays resulted in touchdown romps by quarterback Andrew Steck -- the first being 63 yards and the second a 49-yarder.

"We knew coming in that we had to take it to them early, to get on the board first," said Steck, the electrifying sophomore who finished with a game-high 166 yards on 11 carries with the two touchdowns. "It was pretty cool scoring on the first two plays of the game, especially being untouched on the second one. That goes to all of our lineman blocking good."

The two strikes -- both of which went on the scoreboard by the 6:26 mark of the first quarter -- left Quincy (2-4, 1-2) shellshocked.

"We knew going into the game that (Steck) is a tremendous player, and he showed that again," Quincy coach Rick Little said. "You look at the scoreboard -- 28-13 -- and if you take those two plays, but you can't."

Quincy (2-4, 1-2) struggled the rest of the game to play catch-up. And Galesburg's ability to break the long run kept the Blue Devils comfortably in the rearview mirror.

The Silver Streaks had a total of 13 runs for more than 10 yards, and they finished with 475 yards of total offense.

The Blue Devils scored on a 7-yard run by Shayne Kinne with 3:21 left in the first quarter, cutting the lead to 14-7. But Galesburg answered quickly in the second quarter, with a 21-yard romp by Alex Lozano.

Quincy had an opportunity to cut the lead to seven again late in the second quarter with the ball first-and-goal at the Streaks' 2-yard line.

But Galesburg dominated Quincy in the middle of the line, stuffing the Blue Devils on three runs and swatting down a pass to take the ball over on downs.

"That's 2 yards. That's tough," Galesburg coach Wes Olson said. "You see 2 yards as an offensive coordinator and you think, 'We can get 2 yards.' And, boy, they just kind of stunned them there. We are really proud that we kept them out."

The goal-line stop crushed Quincy, Little said.

"You are leaving seven points out there," said Little, whose team finished with 225 yards. "But it's actually more than that because it changes everything. It change the playcalling and a lot of things in terms of how you plan to attack the defense. But credit Galesburg."

Caleb Ollman, the Streaks junior fullback, had his best game with 77 yards on 15 carries, including a two-yard touchdown plunge late in the second quarter to give Galesburg a 28-7 lead going into half.

"It was good to see Caleb develop," Olson said. "That's a crucial part of our offense but it's still a position that we need to improve upon."

Lozano finished with 68 yards on eight carries and had an interception, while Isiah Tatum rushed for 61 yards on five carries.

Ryan Taylor led Quincy with 88 yards on 17 carries, while Alex McNay rushed for 74 yards on eight attempts.

QHS played without starting quarterback Matt VonderHaar, who was out with the flu. James Leffew started in his place and completed three passes for 26 yards and threw one interception.
