HANNIBAL, Mo. -- In just eight months, 2 Besties Biscuits has taken off in more ways than founders and best friends Angela Brown and Paula Brown could have imagined.
The Hannibal-based duo started 2 Besties Biscuits in September after struggling to find dogs biscuits made with all-natural ingredients. To remedy the problem, they began selling homemade biscuits packaged in pink boxes businesses around Hannibal starting Sept. 16. For every package purchased, 20 percent of the proceeds goes to the Northeast Missouri Humane Society.
But the friends decided 20 percent was not enough.
Exclusively from Jan. 27 through April 30, all proceeds from every package purchased would be donated to the Humane Society as part of what the pair call Operation: Feed the Furballs.
Angela and Paula cashed in the months-long mission proceeds May 6. With the money, they were able to provide 4,832 meals to dogs at the Humane Society.
"The number of meals was determined by the size and number of dogs at the Humane Society right now," Angela Brown said.
The pair and some helpers dropped off 50 40-pound bags and 170 cans of dog food, as well as 164 cans of puppy food.
"We are astonished by the number. We wish we could literally hug every human that purchased a pink box," Angela Brown said.
"This community is truly awesome. They have proven that we can come together to selflessly give. The local businesses that participated in this giving community project are all fantastic. They, along with the people that made purchases, did this. We just baked and boxed."
"It takes a lot of pressure off of our shoulders in finding their next meal. Their generosity is amazing. The dogs appreciate it," Humane Society office manager Meredith McCammon said.
Since September, the friends have expanded their business in many ways.
The sales of T-shirts and totebags launched May 1, and 20 percent to 40 percent of those proceeds will benefit the Humane Society.
Regular customers may now text "JOIN" to 62687 to receive promotions and freebies.
People may purchase new biscuits made of produce, herbs and honey from local farmers, and they can stock up on Twain Treats, which are peanut butter biscuits shaped like Mark Twain's face, mustache and a ship's wheel.
2 Besties Biscuits will be at the Central Park farmers market in Hannibal throughout summer, and products can be purchased there in addition to select businesses around town.
The proceeds from cookie sales will benefit a local organization that supports children with cancer.
Packages of biscuits may be purchased at Chocolaterie Stam, Dempsey & Dempsey Law Firm, Finn's Food & Spirits, Hannibal Chiropractic & Wellness, Jason Utterback with American Family Insurance, Java Jive, Mark Twain Dinette, Ole Planters Restaurant, Scissors and B&B Haircare and YOUnique Art Studio.
