Here's a capsule look at the teams competing in the Class 1 state softball tournament this weekend.


Record: 19-5

Last state tournament appearance: 2015

How it got there: Won Class 1 District 11, beat Gallain 17-6 in sectional, beat Salisbury 6-3 in quarterfinal

Coach: Jonathan Bastian (19-5 at Canton, first season)

Scouting the Tigers: Canton is making its third trip to the state tournament in the last four years and is led by three seniors in Olivia Jarvis, Brianna Caldwell and Katie Gaus. Jarvis has been one of the area's best pitchers as she went 13-4 with a 1.46 earned run average in 95 1/3 innings. She struck out 94 and walked 20. Laken Hugenberg leads the team with a .457 average and a team-high five homers and 43 RBIs. Abby Jarvis and Caldwell both are hitting .409.

North Harrison

Record: 21-7

Last state tournament appearance: 2003

How it got there: Won Class 1 District 15, beat Jefferson Conception 3-2 in sectional, beat Maysville 4-2 in quarterfinal

Coach: Brandon Craig

Scouting the Shamrocks: Payton Craig has earned the reputation as one of the state's best pitchers in Class 1. She fired a perfect game in an 11-0 victory over Mercer County in late September. The Shamrocks won 13 of their first 14 games but lost five of their last eight games to end the regular season. North Harrison won its four playoff games by a combined 16-4, including two shutouts in district play. Brandy Rivet's two-run in the fifth inning broke a tie score against Maysville. Craig struck out seven and allowed three hits in the quarterfinal game.

Pilot Grove

Record: 20-7

Last state tournament appearance: None

How it got there: Won Class 1 District 6, beat Calvary Lutheran 10-2 in sectional, beat Clopton 2-1 in quarterfinal

Coach: Neal Bailey

Scouting the Tigers: Pilot Grove has rattled off six straight victories to reach its first-ever state tournament. Pilot Grove reached the quarterfinals two year ago but fell to Canton. Melanie Wolfe leads Pilot Grove with a .482 batting average in 83 at-bats. She has a team-high six homers and 37 RBIs. Samarah Bailey and Emily Schupp both are hitting above .400 and have driven in a combined 67 runs. Bailey went 18-3 with a 0.65 earned run average. She struck out 227 and walked just 27 in 128 innings.

Last state tournament appearance: 2015

How they got there: Won Class 1 District 1, beat Dora 8-7 in sectional, beat Halfway 15-0 in quarterfinal

Coach: Brian Horrell

Scouting the Red Devils: Chaffee had no problem in its quarterfinal victory over Halfway. The Red Devils banged out 14 hits. Six of those hits were doubles and also hit a pair of home runs. Carlie Milz is the biggest offensive threat. In the quarterfinal, she had three hits, a home run, four RBIs and scored twice. Madeline Hendrix had a homer, two doubles and four RBIs. Kylie Wilhite allowed just three hits in the shutout victory. The Red Devils trailed 7-3 entering the sixth against Dora but scored four in the sixth and one on an error in the bottom of the seventh.
