HANNIBAL, Mo. -- The second annual Operation: Feed the Furballs, put on by Hannibal business 2 Besties Biscuits, has begun.
From now through April 30, all proceeds from the company's sale of pink dog biscuit packages will be used to buy meals for dogs at the Northeast Missouri Humane Society.
"There is always a need for food and supplies at the Humane Society, but often the need is greater after the holidays," co-founder Angela Brown said. "(This campaign) is a chance for the community to come together to feed the furballs."
2 Besties Biscuits, founded in September 2016 by Brown and best friend Paula Brown (no relation), gives 20 percent of all biscuit proceeds to the Humane Society throughout the year. In 2017, more than 7,000 meals for shelter dogs were purchased through the help of 2 Besties Biscuits, Angela Brown said.
The first Operation: Feed the Furballs began in January 2017, and with the money raised, 2 Besties Biscuits provided 4,832 meals to dogs at the Humane Society.
This year, Angela and Paula hope to deliver about 5,500 meals.
"The purchase of one pink box gives four dogs a meal," Angela Brown said. "Every business immediately said yes when asked to participate in this second year of 2 Besties' community project. Neither the participating local business nor 2 Besties Biscuits profits from this in any way. It is truly about giving."
Hannibal businesses selling pink packages of biscuits are Mark Twain Dinette, Java Jive, Chocolaterie Stam, Ole Planter's Restaurant, Finn's Food and Spirits, and Hannibal Chiropractic and Wellness.
"It's so challenging to know how to go about thanking these truly phenomenal small businesses that are participating again this year. Thank you doesn't seem like enough," Angela Brown said. "We don't do this -- our customers and supporters do."
