Haley, Foote, Hartweg win opening matches at state wrestling

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Zach Haley took one step closer to reaching a wrestling state championship match for the second straight year.

Haley, a Quincy Notre Dame senior wrestling at 145 pounds, opened his Class 1A state tournament Thursday at the State Farm Center by pinning Lisle's Jack Kelly in 53 seconds. Haley (42-1), ranked second according to, advances to wrestle Roxana's Alex Maguire (36-8) in Friday's quarterfinals.

West Hancock's Chase Hartweg won his first round match at 160 pounds with an 18-8 major decision over Winnebago's Tristian Faworski.

Hartweg (24-4) will wrestle Belleville Althoff's Danny Braunagel (51-0), who's ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, in the quarterfinals.

Central's Zach Foote won his opening match at 106 pounds by pinning Chicago Dunbar's Quiovany Santos in 2:57. Foote (40-5) will wrestle Vandalia's Jarek Wehrle (38-10) in the quarterfinals.

Foote's teammate Chayse Houston suffered an 13-3 major decision loss to Rock Island Alleman's Jack Patting in the first round of the 132-pound bracket. Houston (35-9) will wrestle Carlinville's Nate Burns (38-11) in the wrestlebacks.

Illini West's Ty Jackson lost his opening round match at 285 pounds when he fell to Lawrenceville's Nolan Tewell in 4:23. Jackson (21-9) will face Kewanee's Nathan Thumma in the wrestlebacks.

In Class 3A, Quincy High School's Hunter Yohn suffered a first-round loss to Glenbard North's Anthony Marre, losing 3-1. Yohn (42-8) will face Lake Forest's Caleb Durbin in Friday's wrestlebacks.
