HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Sample chili, dress in your best medieval attire and support local organizations by attending Saturday's 35th annual Bud and Bud Light Chili Cook-Off in Hannibal.
This year's event, put on by Golden Eagle Distributing and the Hannibal Jaycees, features 14 teams. The 2018 theme is "Dilly, Dilly," based on Bud Light's commercial where a king rouses his people with a pep talk before they battle for more Bud Light.
"The ‘dilly, dilly' commercial is a big thing right now," Melissa Haynes with Golden Eagle Distributing said. " ‘Dilly, dilly' basically means ‘cheers.' "
The winning chili team will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and the team with the best costume will receive a $250 cash prize.
The cook-off will also include mouse races, a Beer Olympics drinking game, and a chili dog-eating contest. The Rebel Pig in Palmyra, Mo., will be serving food and nonalcoholic drinks throughout the day.
Doors to the Admiral Coontz Recreational Center, 301 Warren Barrett Drive, open at 11 a.m., with chili sampling beginning right away. The cook-off goes until 6 p.m.
Admission is $5, and attendees must be 21 or older. The first 100 people who pay to get in will receive a free "Dilly, Dilly" koozie. From 4 to 6 p.m., Custom Transit will provide free shuttles to ensure everyone gets home safely.
Proceeds from the cook-off will benefit National Tom Sawyer Days and the Northeast Missouri Humane Society.
"The Chili Cook-off is always a fun event, and the proceeds go back to helping the community," Haynes said. "It's supposed to be a nice day out, so hopefully we have a good turnout."
