CHAMPAIGN -- Quincy Notre Dame's Zach Haley is two victories away from the goal he set one year ago.
Haley advanced on Friday morning to the semifinals in the 145-pound bracket of the Illinois Class 1A state wrestling tournament at the State Farm Center. He defeated Roxana's Alex Maguire 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Haley (43-1), who lost the state championship match at 138 pounds last February, wrestles next against Eli Ibarra of Aurora Christian, who defeated Ryan Wasielewski of Coal City 6-3 in his quarterfinal match. The semifinal round is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday.
The other semifinal in the 145-pound bracket features Trey Hild (48-1) of Petersburg PORTA against Brody Ivey (43-6) of Sterling Newman. Hild lost to Haley 11-9 in the regional final two weeks ago at Camp Point, but Hild defeated Haley in the sectional final 4-3 at Stanford Olympic last Saturday.
Senior Chase Hartweg from West Hancock lost by technical fall in 2:18 to Belleville Althoff's Danny Braunagel in the quarterfinals of the 160-pound bracket in Class 1A. The University of Illinois-bound Braunagel, who went 47-0 in winning the 152-pound state championship as a junior, improved to 54-0 with the victory.
However, he rebounded to win by technical fall in 5:49 over Martin Martinez of Phoenix Military Academy n Chicago in the first round of wrestlebacks.
Hartweg, now 26-6, meets Henry Dawson of Monticello in the second round of the wrestlebacks.
Junior Chayse Houston from Central won his first match in the wrestlebacks at 132 pounds, winning 6-0 over Oliver Willis of Chicago Hope. His record is now 36-9. His next opponent is Anthony Federico of Belleville Althoff.
Freshman Zach Foote from Central lost 4-3 to Vandalia's Jerek Wehrle in the quarterfinals of the 106-pound bracket, then lost to 1-0 to Gage Mowry of Rock Island Alleman in his first wrestleback match. Foote ends his season with a record of 40-7.
Quincy's Hunter Yohn did not qualify for the wrestlebacks in the 160-pound bracket in Class 3A. Illini West's Ty Jackson did not qualify for the wrestlebacks in the 285-pound bracket in Class 1A.
