HANNIBAL, Mo. -- A 31-year-old Hannibal man who is set to be released from the Missouri Department of Corrections next month is facing a sexual abuse charge in Marion County.

Marion County Prosecuting Attorney David Clayton said Tuesday that Mark A. Trotter was charged with one count of first-degree statutory sodomy.

Trotter is alleged to have had sexual contact with an 8-year-old girl between Aug. 1, 2016, and May 31, 2017.

The probable cause statement from the Hannibal Police Department said the department was contacted last July by an officer with the St. Charles Police Department on a reported sexual abuse case that occurred in Hannibal.

If convicted, Trotter faces a sentence between five years and life in prison.

Clayton said Trotter will return to the Marion County Jail upon his release from prison, where he is serving a sentence for unlawful possession of a firearm.
