KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- An Adair County jury took less than two hours to find a Lewis County man not guilty in connection with the 2017 shooting death of his stepfather.

The Adair County circuit clerk's office said Cody R. Wilson was found not guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Wilson, 20, was accused of shooting David Brooks, 56, twice on April 27, 2017, at 31516 Old Monticello Road in Canton as Brooks argued with his wife, Rachel Brooks, who is Wilson's mother.

A probable cause statement in the case claimed that Wilson told officers that he had a major panic attack during the day and thought about shooting David Brooks. He also reportedly told police that the couple had been arguing all day and that he overheard David Brooks threatening to shoot his mother's boyfriend.

Wilson had been held in the Lewis County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond after his arrest. He was released after the verdict was announced.
