QUINCY -- Been there, done that.
Lindsay Burry believes that will help the Quincy High School girls golf team continue to thrive.
The Blue Devils won the Western Big Six Conference championship last fall for the first time since 2009. They also captured a regional championship for the first time since 2002 when they won the Moline Regional by four strokes over Galesburg.
"The ones who are back definitely feel since they have the taste from last year that they can do it again, maybe even take it further," said Burry, now in her fourth season as the QHS head coach.
A good mix of experience and youth helps foster such confidence.
Senior Brooke Walbring and junior Avery Scott return from the championship team. Scott earned All-WB6 honors last season, finishing fifth at the conference tournament and following it up with a top-five finish at the regional. Walbring is in her fourth season in the varsity lineup.
"I'm counting on them to lead the young ones in the right direction," Burry said.
Two freshmen are on the way.
Laci Novosel finished second at the Quincy Women's City Golf Championship with a 36-hole total of 170. Paige Cain took second last fall in the IESA sectional, and both Novosel and Cain finished in the top 20 at the IESA state tournament.
"They know what they're doing," Burry said. "It's not like we're teaching them course etiquette or things like that. They know what to expect there.
"It's kind of transitioning into high school golf. You might be playing against seniors, against 18-year-olds, but you can compete with them."
That's where watching experienced players handle the mental side of the game pays off.
"It's more than a physical game," Burry said. "It's a team game."
Burry is confident she has a team that can compete.
"We have a good mixture," Burry said. "We have some competition from the younger girls. I'm expecting those freshmen to push, and I saw that in qualifying. I think it's going to be a good competitiveness amongst ourselves, and hopefully that carries over to tournaments."
