TROY, Mo. -- The Hannibal softball team lost two out of three games in the 12th annual Leadoff Classic as Andrew Pollard made his debut as the Pirates' coach.
Hannibal allowed six runs in the third inning of the first game against St. Dominic, losing 9-2. The Pirates then allowed 11 runs in the third inning and 18 hits in the game in a 15-7 loss to Fort Zumwalt South.
The Pirates got off to a fast start in the third game when Josie Zeiger hit a two-run homer, and Hannibal gave Pollard his first victory with a 10-4 victory.
Highland lost all three games it played --3-1 to Wentzville Timberland 3-1, 9-2 to Francis Howell Central 9-2 and 9-5 to Hillsboro.
Highland allowed three runs in the first inning against Timberland and were unable to recover. The Çougars' one run came courtesy of a RBI single by Carli Scifres.
The Cougars allowed five runs in the third inning against Francis Howell Central and never recovered, despite tying Howell Central in hits. Highland made six errors in the game.
Kelsey Boyd hit a walk-off grand slam to win the third game in dramatic fashion for Hillsboro.
Palmyra also played in the tournament, losing to Columbia Battle 10-9 and defeating Wentzville Liberty 10-9. No score was available on the Panthers' third game against Hazelwood West. No information was available on the other two games.
