Miller leads Unity to Suns Classic championship

AUGUSTA, Ill. -- The Unity volleyball team won the Suns Classic by beating Southeastern and Payson Seymour in the championship pool Saturday night for their first title at Southeastern since 2011.

The Mustangs (6-1) beat the Suns 25-23, 25-20 and the Indians 25-23, 25-17. Addison Miller, the tournament most valuable player, and Krista Schrader led Unity against Southeastern with seven kills apiece. Alyssa Steinkamp finished with 10 digs, and Kaylee Nichols handed out 16 assists. Hope Cheney led Southeastern with 11 kills, and Avery Waner had nine digs.

Miller, Schrader, Carson Moore and Brianna Blickhan had six kills apiece against Payson Seymour. Steinkamp had 13 digs, and Nichols added 19 assists. Riley Epperson led Payson with five kills and 12 digs.

The Indians beat Southeastern 25-18, 25-17 to wrap up second place. Epperson led Payson (7-3) with 10 kills, Cassie Eidson finished with 19 assists and Tori Schieferdecker served five aces to go with six kills. Lantz had four kills and 12 digs for the Suns.

Illini West (9-3) earned fourth place winning the Gold Pool. The Chargers defeated Rushville 25-13, 25-15 and Liberty 25-18, 22-25, 15-10. Gracie McDowell led Illini West with 28 digs and 16 kills on the day. Kendra Johnson had 26 assists and 8 digs, and Hannah Wood added 23 digs.

Liberty placed second in the Gold Pool by beating Rushville 25-19, 25-16. Paige Knuffman led the Eagles with nine kills, and Katie Wagner had 11 assists.

Beardstown won the Silver Pool after beating Central 25-11, 25-20 and West Hancock 25-10, 25-12. Elizabeth Garcia had 16 digs and Hillary McGill had 31 assists for the Tigers. Central defeated West Hancock 25-21, 25-12 and placed eighth.

Brown County defeated South Fulton 25-20, 25-22 and Western 25-19, 25-16 to win the Bronze Pool and earn 10th place. Bre Gooding had 26 digs, and Faith Boylan had eight kills on the day for the Hornets.

Western lost to South Fulton 25-12, 14-25, 15-10 and finished 12th.
