MOUNT STERLING, Ill. -- Two Brown County Historical Society sites will be open to the public Sunday afternoons this month.
Visitors will be welcomed from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Depot Museum and Ferguson School, both on North Jefferson Street at the Brown County Fairgrounds.
The restored one-room school looks as if it is ready for the teacher to ring the bell at the start of a school day. Pull-down maps show the world as it once was. Textbooks are on the desks, and Brown County school awards from the past are displayed.
The museum features railroad artifacts, displays from county churches and the county fair, more than 400 photos of Brown County farmers taken during the 1950s and '60s, an extensive military exhibit and displays of furniture, toys and farming equipment from the past.
Groups of any size are welcome to visit anytime by calling 217-289-3480.
The museum is handicapped accessible. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
