QUINCY -- Evan Wiegand's performance off the bench in the first half Saturday forced Quincy High School boys soccer coach Ron Bridal to leave him on the field for the start of the second half.

It turned out to be a wise move.

Off a Jaeden Smith corner kick in the 59th minute, Wiegand got on a bouncing ball and knocked it into the net to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 victory over Jefferson City at Flinn Stadium.

"One of the things I've been harping on lately is we need to be little bit cleaner and execute better," Bridal said. "Evan really is technical and can execute. That's what it came down to. He earned his minutes today with his performance, and he really earned some minutes moving forward.

"We were better with him in there today."

Playing without injured starters Robby Phillips and Grant Higgins, the Blue Devils (7-1) created a handful of chances in a back-and-forth first half. The Jays, who had only one shot in the first half, created three quality scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the second half, forcing QHS senior keeper Jake Happel to make one save.

"Jeff City was a lot more aggressive in the second half," Bridal said. "We battled, and we got a good goal."

The Blue Devils earned the corner kick midway through the half, and Smith played it from the left corner. It bounced past the Jefferson City keeper at the near post, and Weigand crashed the goal and knocked it in for his second goal of the season.

Quincy outshot Jefferson City 13-3 and posted its third shutout.

"It was really important, and we stressed it at halftime, that we came out and got a shutout in the second half," Bridal said. "We're not going to get beat very many times if we shut a team out."

Normal Community 1, Quincy Notre Dame 0: Riley Raker's goal in the 33rd minute was the only tally in the Raiders' loss on Saturday at the Corn Crib. Raker scored off a cross from Jared Nutt. After a scramble in front of the net, Raker tapped it into an open goal. QND (6-3) outshot the Ironmen 9-7.
