QUINCY -- Bob Cowman set goals for the John Wood Community College men's soccer team before it ever met.
Now that the Trail Blazers have won the first five games in the relaunch of the program, Cowman might have to adjust his goals.
Blake Herman scored the only goal of Tuesday's game as JWCC defeated Lincoln Land Community College 1-0 at Advance Physical Therapy Field on the Quincy Notre Dame campus.
"I thought .500 for the year would be the high end," Cowman said. "We're already one game shy of meeting our goal. If you had asked me before we had a practice, I'd have told you I didn't expect that.
"After we played our first scrimmage, I thought we'd be OK, and we've just kept getting better. Putting 21 people who have never played together is no small task, I promise you, but we work more on the interpersonal relationship side than we do on soccer."
Both teams missed excellent scoring chances at the end of the first half. Center back Jonathan Deck cleared a shot in front of the JWCC goal after a Lincoln Land player had dribbled past goalkeeper Eric Lubbert. Herman hit a low shot just before the half expired that Lincoln Land goalkeeper Josue Resendiz dove to his left and batted away.
Resendiz was outstanding in goal for the visitors, making 11 saves. JWCC outshot Lincoln Land 21-6.
"It's easy to get frustrated, but I wanted them to encourage each other," Cowman said. "Things weren't falling our way, but I didn't want it to be turned into negative energy."
Herman finally broke the shutout in the game's 82nd minute. A long pass was played to JWCC forward Simon Surin, who flicked it with his head to Herman. Resendiz came off his line to challenge Herman, but Herman tapped it around him and hit his game-winning shot between the legs of a Loggers defender.
The goal is Herman's seventh this season.
