GALESBURG, Ill. -- It wasn't easy, but the Quincy High School boys soccer team survived a challenge from Western Big Six Conference foe Galesburg and prevailed 2-0 Tuesday night.

Jaeden Smith scored two second-half goals for the Blue Devils, who outshot Galesburg (5-3, 0-2 WB6) 13-5.

QHS coach Ron Bridal told his team at halftime to treat the contest like it was for the conference title.

"You win your conference by taking care of business in that game, not waiting until the last match of the season," Bridal said. "I told them to play like it was the conference championship game in the second half, and that's exactly what the boys did."

Galesburg coach Phil Redington was pleased his team battled to the end.

"Of course I've not happy with the loss, but on the other hand, I'm very happy with our effort," he said. "We came out and were very competitive against a team that moves the ball well all over the field."

The Blue Devils dominated in the first half but couldn't get the ball past Galesburg keeper Kyler Smith. In the sixth minute, Kyler Smith got a hand on a penalty shot by Jaeden Smith and deflected it off the cross bar. In the 32nd minute, after a scramble in the box for a loose ball, a pair of Quincy players had Smith dead to rights, but Caden Wilson managed to boot the ball out of danger.

The Streaks didn't get a shot on goal until the 36th minute.

Jaeden Smith was awarded another penalty shot early in the second half after a hand ball was called in the box. He beat Kyler Smith to his left for the game's first goal. Smith scored his second goal in the 61st minute after a scramble in front of the net.

The best scoring chance for the Silver Streaks came in the 69th minute. Blue Devils keeper Jake Happel blocked the first shot but couldn't control the rebound, and the Streaks' second shot was just wide of the post.

Bridal was pleased how his team responded from a 1-0 loss against host Springfield on Monday.

"To come back a day later and play another tough team on the road, it shows the heart this team has and the commitment they have to battle, day after day," Bridal said.
