RIPLEY, Ill. -- A Rushville man is in jail facing a variety of traffic and criminal charges after a police chase last weekend.

Brown County Sheriff Karl Groesch said Drew Mathewson, 26, was stopped on U.S. 24 by deputies at 11:03 p.m. Saturday. Mathewson was wanted on a warrant issued by the Illinois Department of Corrections alleging violation of his supervised release.

According to charging documents, Mathewson did not comply with deputies' orders and fled the scene in a pickup truck. The chase followed on back roads before returning to U.S. 24. Mathewson is alleged to have struck a Mount Sterling Police squad car.

As the chase continued east on U.S. 24, the fleeing vehicle traveled in the wrong lane of traffic, pushing oncoming traffic off the road. When the pickup entered Ripley, it left the road and struck a shop building on the north side of U.S. 24.

Officers said Mathewson fled the crash on foot and was apprehended later in a Ripley home after officers and canines were brought in for a ground search.

Mathewson has been held in the Schuyler County Jail, and on Monday was charged with resisting or obstructing a police officer, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, criminal damage to government-supported property, reckless driving, criminal damage to property, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, speeding and improper lane usage.
