Philadelphia, Mo., man dies in crash blamed on icy highway

PALMYRA, Mo. -- A Philadelphia, Mo., man was killed after the vehicle he was driving lost control on ice and crashed Friday afternoon south of Palmyra.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Larry D. Parkes, 42, was pronounced dead by Marion County Coroner Rick Jones at the crash on U.S. 61 at the interchange with Business U.S. 61.

Parkes was driving a 2008 Ford Explorer at 3:02 p.m. when he lost control on the ice-covered road, and the vehicle struck a guardrail.

A passenger in the vehicle, Kelli M. Walker, 35, of Philadelphia, Mo., suffered serious injuries. She was taken by the Marion County Ambulance Service to Hannibal Regional Hospital for treatment.

Police said both occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts.

Also assisting at the scene were the Palmyra Police Department, the Palmyra Fire Department and the Marion County Sheriff's Department.
