BOWLING GREEN, Mo. -- The first ever 911 director for Pike County has been named.
The Pike County Board approved hiring Jim Porter to a two-year contract at Wednesday's meeting.
Porter is coming to Pike County from Irondale. He worked for the Missouri Department of Corrections before taking the 911 director position.
Porter was part of a group that worked to establish a sales tax in Washington County to establish a 911 system. He also served as the county's first 911 director.
Porter's other experience in public safety includes being a firefighter, president of a fire district, secretary of an ambulance district, a certified E-911 director and instructor. He also is a veteran.
In August, Pike County voters agreed to impose a sales tax of 1/16 of 1 percent to finance an independent 911 emergency dispatch system.
