QUINCY -- Dylan Austin's role at WGEM-TV has changed but not his approach.

Austin, 32, is in his first week as the new co-anchor of the evening newscasts with Alexandra Carter.

"This isn't just a stop along the way for me. This is where I want to be," Austin said. "For the foreseeable future, I'll be here. This is what I want to do."

Austin joins in the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts after spending three years on WGEM News Today, the early morning newscasts he co-anchored with Natalie Will. Before the early morning news shifts, Austin worked as a weekend sports anchor at the station. Before that, he was employed at KHQA.

Austin is a native of Warsaw, a graduate of Western Illinois University and doing exactly what he wants.

Austin knows the area he covers and thinks he has a connection with those in West-Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri who watch WGEM. He has felt comfortable in all of the roles he has filled.

"My mindset is the same, and I'm the same person in real life as I am on television," Austin said.

Austin originally had an interest in teaching and coaching, but one of his WIU instructors thought broadcasting might be a good fit for him.

Austin said the biggest adjustment his career was when he switched from sports to early morning news.

"I had to be at work at 3:30 in the morning," he said. "That was a big adjustment."

Those early hours were demanding, but working with Will was rewarding.

"Natalie helped me a lot," he said. "It was several months before I really felt comfortable with the new position."

Austin likes the idea that no two days in his line of work are ever the same.

"It's exciting," he said.
