PALMYRA, Mo. -- The first three quarters of Tuesday night's basketball game for Madison L. Meyer were ... well, she would just rather forget them.
The senior guard missed 9 of 11 shots, picked up her fourth foul with 4.9 seconds left in the third quarter and had more turnovers than she cared to count. She also got an earful from Quincy Notre Dame coach Eric Orne after taking an ill-advised shot before halftime.
"I just get too into my head, and when I make a mistake, I get down on myself," Meyer said. "That's why he was telling at me. I don't just brush things off and go to the next play."
Remarkably, she had a fourth quarter to remember.
Meyer scored 13 of her 18 points in the final five minutes and assisted on three other baskets as QND, which had scored 20 points through three quarters, scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to rally past Palmyra 46-40.
"She played like a senior should," Orne said about Meyer's fourth-quarter play. "She didn't turn the ball over, and she played under control. We had good possessions and played like we knew how to play."
Meyer made two baskets in a 12-second span to bring QND within 36-35 in the fourth quarter, then fed junior Sydney Hummert in the post for a layup to put the Raiders ahead with 3:05 to play.
Palmyra's Amy Bryan made a free throw to tie the score with 2:24 to go, and Orne called a timeout. Palmyra switched to a zone on the next possession, and a skip pass to Meyer on the left wing led to a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:04 to play.
"I knew Orne was going to call some play to get that open shot, and darn the luck, I had three girls go to the same spot," Palmyra coach Chris Parsons said. "We left their best shooter open."
Meyer found Kenning and Hummert for baskets in the final two minutes, then finished the night with two free throws with 15 seconds to go.
"That's the best kind of basketball," Meyer said. "When we work together and execute, and we're on the same page, we play like we did in the fourth quarter. We played like sisters."
For three quarters, the Raiders played more like that annoying aunt or uncle you hope to avoid during the holidays.
They missed 19 of 28 shots and turned the ball over 20 times. Hummert went to the bench with two fouls with 4:28 to play in the first quarter, and she only played 48 seconds in the second quarter before she earned her third foul.
Orne held out Hummert for the first four minutes of the third quarter, and his team fell behind 21-15 on a layup by Megan Stone. Play was stopped after QND's Kassidy Kenning went to the sideline with a bloodied nose, and Orne took the opportunity to pick up a technical foul while expressing his displeasure.
"(Hummert) got frustrated, I got frustrated, we all got frustrated," Orne said. "I'll give (assistant coach Bob) Sheffield credit. He kept his composure and came up with a couple of good sets for us."
The first half didn't go well for Palmyra, either. The Panthers turned the ball over 15 times and took only 12 shots.
However, Stone scored eight points in the third quarter as Palmyra led by as many as 11 points, Parsons thought his team didn't take advantage of the opportunity to put QND away with Meyer and Hummert missing so much time with foul trouble.
"We couldn't hang on to the dang thing," he said of his team's 25 turnovers. "We were giving away a lot of possessions. We were up eight points, 10 points, but we've got to extend it. (QND's) a good basketball team, but we gave away that game."
