Prep roundup: Mustangs put together tide-turning run

A 14-0 run that started late in the first half help the Unity girls basketball team earn a 59-51 victory over Canton, Mo., on Thursday night in Mendon, Ill.

Kaylee Nichols' 3-pointer gave Unity the lead for good at 21-20 with 1 minute, 10 seconds left in the first half. A layup by Addison Miller with 5:20 left in the third quarter extended the Mustangs' lead to 32-20.

The Tigers (1-5) eventually cut the lead to 43-36 when Laken Hugenberg made a 3-pointer late in the third quarter, but Canton never got any closer.

Miller led Unity (6-4) with 26 points and eight rebounds, while Addison Eger had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Hugenberg led four Canton players in double figures with 15 points.

Central-Southeastern 45, West Hancock 33: Panthers coach Matt Long picked up his 500th career victory in the West Central Conference game in Camp Point. Laney Lantz led all scorers with 18 points. Kenady Marlow and Leah Miller each had 12 points for the Panthers (7-0, 4-0 WCC). Emma Knipe led the Titans (8-5, 5-1 WCC) with 16 points.

Pittsfield 59, Brussels 22: The Saukees allowed only four points in the first half to roll to the victory in Voshall Gym in Pittsfield.

Pittsfield scored 26 points in the first quarter, getting six apiece from four different players. Chloe Lemons led the Saukees with 14 points, while Sydney Bauer added 11.

Illini West 55, North Fulton 22: The Chargers outscored the Wildcats 22-0 in the third quarter to earn a Prairieland Conference South Division victory in Cuba. Karli Artman led Illini West (8-3, 2-0 Prairieland) with 13 points. Kailee Artman and Megan Harrell each had nine points.

Brown County 58, North Greene 30: Ally Heldt scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the first half to lead the Hornets to the victory in White Hall. Brown County led 25-12 at halftime and outscored North Greene 22-8 in the third quarter. Belle Koch added 12 points for the Hornets.

Carrollton 49, Western/Payson 47: Aftyn Harrison scored eight of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats' rally fell short in the loss in Carrollton.

The Wildcats outscored the Hawks 18-15 in the fourth quarter but couldn't get closer than two points down the stretch. Jordan Walston also scored 15 points for Western.

Monroe City 55, Marceline 40: Jada Summers had 14 points as the Panthers picked up a non-conference victory in Monroe City, Mo. The Panthers (6-2) outscored Marceline 16-6 in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Bailee Hays and Hallie Dyer each had 10 points for Monroe City.

South Shelby 48, Marion County 20: Mallory Wood had 12 points to lead the Cardinals to a non-conference victory in Shelbina, Mo. Diane Mayes added 11 points for South Shelby (4-3). The Mustangs (2-7) managed just six field goals.

North Callaway 34, Louisiana 31: The Bulldogs suffered the loss in Kingdom City, Mo. Caitlyn Gloe led Louisiana with 10 points, while Kamara Combs added nine.
