'Love (still) means never having to say you're sorry'

It was probably back in my high school days that I discovered -- "admitted" might be more accurate -- how much I enjoy schlocky, romantic movies.

My girlfriend at the time and I went to see "Love Story" in 1970. The film was released just before Christmas that year and was bringing a nation to tears.

While the movie was predictable, sappy and overrated, "Love Story" provided all future baby boomers with a piece of cinematic history that remains part of our vernacular. Those who have seen the film, especially in the theater, will probably never forget the famous line spoken by Ali MacGraw to Ryan O'Neal:

"Love means never having to say you're sorry."

More than 48 years later, I still remember wiping a tear from my eye when MacGraw's character, Jenny, dies of leukemia. (When the Cleveland Indians won the 1995 pennant, I also needed a tissue to dry my eyes, but that's another story for another day.)

While the line from "Love Story" always will be No. 1 on my list of tugging-at-the-heartstrings movie remembrances, here are some others that rank close behind:

º "It was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together ... and I knew it." -- Tom Hanks, "Sleepless In Seattle."

º "So it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard. We're gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day ... ." -- Ryan Gosling, "The Notebook."

º "Don't forget I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." -- Julia Roberts, "Notting Hill."

º "I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you." -- Jennifer Grey, "Dirty Dancing."

º "You will never age for me, nor fade, nor die." -- Joseph Fiennes, "Shakespeare in Love."

º "I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes.

"And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve.

"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." -- Billy Crystal to Meg Ryan, "When Harry Met Sally."

º "I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly." -- Meg Ryan, "You've Got Mail."

Any of those ring a bell or cause your heart to skip a beat? If so, let's get together and form our own hopeless romantics club.
