QUINCY -- A $1,000 donation was presented by the Adams County Suicide Prevention Coalition to the Quincy Police Department to support its peer-to-peer support program.

The program, which is in the planning stages, seeks to assist law enforcement personnel who are dealing with life problems that can cause stress, anxiety and depression. Police officers also are routinely exposed to traumatic events and situations in the line of duty.

The department is providing a five-day training session in Quincy to officers who will be part of the program. The training will be offered by Warriors Rest Foundation, which will provide the training in Quincy.

"We believe this peer-to-peer program is one way we can prevent the tragedy of suicide," said Barb Baker Chapin, chair of the coalition and director of development at Transition of Western Illinois. "This initiative will provide important services to law enforcement personnel who otherwise might not reach out for help."
