QUINCY -- The final score showed a 12-point spread between the No. 1-ranked Illinois Central College women's basketball team and unranked John Wood Community College.

Another number -- four -- better illustrates the degree of separation between the Mid-West Athletic Conference foes.

As in the first four minutes of the second half.

Illinois Central led 37-34 at halftime and went on a 10-2 run to open the third quarter for an 11-point advantage. That gap stayed relatively stable for the rest of the game as JWCC never drew closer than eight points and suffered a 69-57 loss Monday night at the Student Activity Center.

"That really stinks considering how close we were in the first half," JWCC sophomore forward Chelsea Wood said. "If we would have had the same first four minutes that we had in the first half, we could have won that game easily."

Had more shots the Trail Blazers (14-10, 2-3 MWAC) took in the fourth quarter gone in, it would have potentially changed how the final five minutes were played. Instead, the Trail Blazers scored just 13 points in the final quarter and never made the Cougars (23-1, 5-0 MWAC) uncomfortable.

"We had too much of an uphill battle," JWCC coach Norm Rodriguez said. "(Illinois Central) didn't beat themselves. We kind of took some things and beat ourselves. If we shore those up, it's anybody's game the next time we play them."

Wood had 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Trail Blazers made a concerted effort to get the ball inside. However, JWCC committed 15 turnovers against just nine assists and shot 34.5 percent from the field.

Yet, the Trail Blazers realize they hung with the No. 1 Division II team in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

"We gained the perspective that even though we're not ranked and our record is not as good as some people in our conference that we can still fight with them," Wood said. "We can still get a good seed in our region tournament."
