College baseball roundup: Trail Blazers erupt in fifth inning

The John Wood Community College baseball team broke open a scoreless game with a six-run top of the fifth inning to beat Rowan College 7-5 Monday afternoon in the final day of the Ripken Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Trail Blazers had eight hits in the frame, and the highlight was Noah McCreary's two-run double.

Rowan College, however, answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, scored a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but JWCC never surrendered the lead after scoring two insurance runs.

Andrew Fay picked up the victory for JWCC after he threw a complete-game, while allowing five earned runs. He struck out two and walked three.

JWCC finished the trip 4-3.

Columbia College 14, Hannibal-LaGrange 3: The Trojans allowed seven runs in the second inning and fell in an American Midwest Conference game Monday afternoon in Columbia, Mo.

The Cougars (10-8, 6-4 AMC) collected seven hits in the frame and raced to a 7-0 advantage. HLGU (7-10, 3-7) never recovered.

Columbia's largest lead was 13 when it led HLGU 14-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Edwin Betancourt was the only Trojan to have multiple hits in the game, and Garret Welschmeyer had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the third inning.

The Trojans were held to just four hits.
