Area roundup: Chargers put up 20 runs in season opener

The Illini West softball team's offense may already be in midseason form.

The Chargers banged out 23 hits on the way to a 20-6 season-opening victory over Beardstown Thursday afternoon at Lenz Field in Jacksonville, Ill.

Morgan Broadwell and Brooke Lawson both had four hits for Illini West (1-0), while Ali Bliss, Daytona Dooley and Katelyn Murphy had three hits apiece.

Broadwell and Elizabeth Talley both had four RBIs, while Lawson drove in three.

Lawson threw six innings for Illini West, allowing five runs on six hits. She struck out six and walked three.

Beradstown had 11 hits, and its best inning was a three-run bottom of the fourth that cut the deficit to 11-5. Illini West scored nine straight runs to pull away.

Roberts Wesleyan 63, Hannibal-LaGrange 61: The Trojans' bid for a spot in the championship game of the NCCAA national tournament was cut down.

HLGU (19-12) led 35-22 going to the locker room, but No. 2 seed Robert Wesleyan (16-13) stormed back. HLGU trailed 69-58 with seven seconds remaining, but couldn't make up the deficit.

Brady Smith led HLGU with 21 points.

HLGU will play Bluefield College Saturday in the third-place game.

Slippery Rock 7, QU women 0: The Hawks were blanked in the USPTR Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C.

QU's Anna Konczak had the closest match of the day, but fell to Slippery Rock's Lauren Fadden 6-2, 6-7, 10-7 in No. 5 singles play.

Earlham College 6, QU men 3: The Hawks picked up two victories in singles play, but it wasn't enough in the USPTR Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C.

Dane Mechali defeated Earlham's Nico Manni 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, while Erik Weiler won a three-set match over Nikolas Trikkas-Psomas 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 for Hawks' lone singles wins.

QU's Collin Adams and Weiler won their No. 2 doubles match over Manni and Trikkas-Psomas.

Mount Mercy 3, Culver-Stockton College 0: The Wildcats fell in straight sets of 26-24, 25-18, 25-15 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play in Charles Field House.

Shaquille Barker led C-SC (2-16, 0-8 Heart) with 12 kills. Erin Lee and Daniel Fohey each had 10 kills for the Wildcats.
