Palmyra team wins WGEM Quiz Bowl tournament

QUINCY -- The quiz bowl team from Palmyra (Mo.) High School won the WGEM Academic Challenge Quiz Bowl tournament with a 290-190 win over Bushnell-Prairie High School on March 16.

The match was the last in a seven-part television series airing weekly on WGEM TV and News Talk FM 105.1.

Members of the Palmyra High School team were Mason Mitchell, Evan Nierman, Trevor Stratton, Chase Goldinger and Tim Wellman. Gretta Stark was the team's coach.

Bushnell-Prairie High School team members were Noah Cox, Kenny Suter, Ilese Rodeffer, Keith Hoyle, Seth Brown and Emma Bradford. Katie Caulkins coached the Bushnell-Prairie team.

The WGEM Academic Challenge featured 16 schools from the region competing in 15 matches. The host of this year's tournament was WGEM Sports Director Tony Cornish Jr. The series was co-sponsored by John Wood Community College and WGEM.

Judges for the 2019 challenge were JWCC faculty members Melissa Knapp, assistant professor of mathematics; Mike Terry, chair and professor of language, literature and humanities; and Dr. Randy Wolfmeyer, assistant professor of engineering. Shawn Dickerman, marketing manager at WGEM, directed the series.
