Hunter Florea led Highland with four RBIs on four hits, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning that gave the Cougars a 4-3 lead in a 6-5 victory on Wednesday in local high school baseball action.
Monroe City took a 2-0 lead after an error in the first inning and an RBI single from Brady Jones in the second inning. Florea hit an BRI double in the third to cut the lead to one, but Jones answered with an RBI double in fourth. Florea's three-run home run and an RBI single from Elijah Mead gave Highland a 5-3 lead. Tucker Olson hit a solo home run in the sixth to make it 6-3.
Florea came on to pitch in relief for the Cougars and gave up two runs on a single from Jon Saxbury, but Florea got a pop up to strand the tying run at second.
Brown County 6, Pittsfield 3: Mason Henry's RBI double highlighted a four-run first inning for the Hornets in a victory in Mount Sterling. Pittsfield (3-3) collected 10 hits but never recovered from the first inning. Henry earned the victory for the Hornets, pitching five innings and allowing seven hits, two runs, while striking out four batters.
Illini West 9, Liberty 5: The Chargers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first after an RBI single from Lincoln Gooding and a two-run single from Carter Wildrick and earned their first victory of the spring. Liberty cut the lead to 3-2 with RBI singles from Cannen Wolf and Cole Hanlin in the second inning, but another RBI hit from Gooding pushed the lead back up to two. The Chargers' Michael Lord provided more insurance with an RBI double in the fourth, but the Eagles came back with RBI singles from Ryan Baumgartner and Logan Robbins in the fifth inning. Illini West finally put it away with a four-run sixth inning.
South Shelby 14, Marion County 10: The Cardinals scored 14 runs off 12 hits and scored in six of the seven innings in Philadelphia, Mo. South Shelby jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning off Keaton Pantaleo's two-run double and a dropped fly ball that scored two. Pantaleo also led off the third inning with a solo home run to center to give the Cardinals a 6-3 lead. South Shelby added two more runs in the fourth, and Levi Blevins hit an RBI double to put the Cardinals ahead 9-3. Luke Woutzke hit a leadoff solo home run was part of a four-run sixth inning.
Central 8, Western 5: The Wildcats scored five late runs in the sixth inning but didn't complete the comeback in a loss in Camp Point. The Panthers (3-1) took the lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI triple from Lane Ippensen, and the score grew to 7-0 by the start of the sixth. Western made it interesting, cutting the deficit to two thanks to five hits and two walks. Kollen Hughes picked up the victory for Central. He pitched five innings and allowed seven hits and four runs, while striking out four.
Mexico 5, Hannibal 3: The Pirates forced extra innings but fell short in the ninth inning in a loss at home in Hannibal, Mo. After Mexico (5-5) scored the game's first two runs in the top half of the first inning, Hannibal's Gabe Worthington replied with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning. Mexico regained the lead in the third inning thanks to an unearned run, but Hannibal (3-4) tied the game again when Mexico's Ty Price walked Chase Kirby with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mexico regained its lead in the ninth with the help of two errors by the Pirates.
Montgomery County 11, Mark Twain 1: Montgomery County's Tristan Camp hit a grand slam in the second inning to make the score 9-0 in the second inning. Camp also had an RBI single, and he pitched three innings, allowing one run off two hits and struck out four. Carson Parker, pitched the final two innings allowing two hits and striking out five.
Southeastern 14, West Prairie 1: Shad Flesner allowed one run off three hits and struck out 12 batters in five innings to lead the Suns. Flesner also drove in three runs on three hits, including two doubles and scored a run. Brayden Winters drove in three runs off four hits and scored two runs, and Brock Winters drove in four runs, scored one and had a double for the Suns.
Macon 5, Clark County 3: The Tigers scored the game's first four runs in a Clarence Canon Conference game in Macon, Mo. Clark County (0-1) gave up two runs in the first inning and a run in both the second and third inning. The Indians responded with a run in each of the next three innings, but they would get no closer as Macon added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Logan Gutting had two hits and two RBIs for the Indians.
