HANNIBAL, Mo. -- A Hannibal man is facing multiple charges after police said he caused physical injuries, including a skull fracture, to an infant.

Cody J. Adkerson, 22, formerly of West Plains, was arrested Tuesday. He was charged on Wednesday with three counts of abuse or neglect of a child.

A probable cause statement filed in Marion County Circuit Court said an investigator with the Missouri Department of Social Services' Children's Division reported April 2 that a 10-week-old boy was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis for treatment of a skull fracture and two old brain bleeds. The infant also had a healing arm fracture. Surgery was scheduled April 5 to drain fluid from the infant's brain.

The child is expected to recover.

The statement said Adkerson visited the Hannibal Police Department for an interview with Sgt. Jennifer Grote. The injuries and how they could possibly occur were explained to Adkerson, who reportedly said that he was watching the infant, who was about 2 weeks old, when he became "frustrated and overwhelmed and shook (the infant)."

Police said Adkerson also said that when the infant was about 1 month old, he jerked his right arm up while getting him out of a car seat.

Adkerson also reportedly told police that on March 25, the infant started to cry and scream at home, and as Adkerson was running through a bedroom doorway with the infant in his left arm, the back of the infant's head struck the door frame.

Adkerson is being held in the Marion County Jail on $100,000 cash-only bond. He is set to return to Marion County Circuit Court on April 22 for a preliminary hearing.
