Keokuk residents arrested after high-speed pursuit

KEOKUK, Iowa -- Two Keokuk, Iowa, residents were arrested Wednesday after a reported high-speed pursuit that started in Hamilton, Ill.

Andrew J. Thompson, 28, was arrested on an outstanding Lee County, Iowa, warrant, and Gina L. Hardman, 52, was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Hancock County Sheriff's Department said a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle registration violation on a gray Dodge Durango at 11:20 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 136 and Main Street in Hamilton. During the stop, the Sheriff's Department said the driver, identified as Thompson, fled the scene by getting into a blue Mazda 3 driven by Hardman.

The vehicle reportedly fled police at a high rate of speed heading west on U.S. 136 across the Keokuk/Hamilton Bridge when it lost control and struck several vehicles stopped at the Second Street traffic light in Keokuk. Both Thompson and Hardman were arrested at the crash scene and taken to the Lee County Jail.

The Sheriff's Department said the incident remains under investigation and further charges are expected.

Assisting were the Hamilton and Keokuk police departments.
