MOBERLY, Mo. -- Kanon Kendrick watched Westran golfer Trey Burton birdie two of the last three holes on the front nine and knew he was in for a duel.

That's what the South Shelby golfer wanted.

"I knew it was going to be a fun back nine," Kendrick said.

A strong final three holes made it more enjoyable. Kendrick went 2-under par on the final three holes at Heritage Hills Golf Club to capture the Class 1 District 6 individual title Monday afternoon.

Kendrick finished the tournament with a 1-under par 69 to win medalist, and he was two shots better than Burton.

"It came down to the wire," Kendrick said. "That definitely makes it more fun. We we're battling it out all day."

Back-to-back birdies gave Kendrick the advantage.

His first came on the par-4 No. 16 when his tee shot left him with about 40 yards to the pin. He stuck the wedge shot close and tapped in the easy birdie to get to even-par.

On No. 17, another par-4, Kendrick nearly drove the green before sticking another approach shot within gimmie distance for the birdie to go 1-under.

"My wedge game was good on those," Kendrick said. "That's what allowed me to get those birdies."

Kendrick pared the final hole and sealed the title.

Teammate Cole Mitchell also advances to the sectional round on May 6 at Tanglewood Golf Course in Harrisburg after shooting a 98.

"It was a great day," Kendrick said. "I got to get compete with some different guys that I usually don't get to compete with. It was a lot of fun, and I'm happy to take somebody else with me to sectionals."
