It took a four-goal effort from a dynamic scorer to end the Hannibal girls soccer team's season.
Wentzville Liberty's Chloe Netzel scored four times, including back-to-back goals with less than 10 minutes to play that sealed a 5-2 victory in Saturday's semifinals of the Class 3 District 8 tournament.
Hannibal ends its season at 19-5.
The Pirates trailed 1-0 on own goal before Haley Ballinger tied the game with an unassisted goal in the 27th minute. Netzel gave Liberty the lead with a goal in the final minute of the first half.
Netzel scored in the 45th minute for a 3-1 lead before Hannibal's Kaylee Nichols knocked in a corner kick from Hannah Nichols in the 69th minute. Netzel answered by driving in a free kick from 30 yards in the 72nd minute and scoring an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute.
Barrington Bash: The Central softball team lost a pair of games Saturday, falling 15-0 to Rockridge and 14-6 to Tinley Park Andrew.
Against the Rockets, the Panthers were held to two hits and struggled after allowing nine runs in the first inning. Libby Ippenson and Katie Hildebrand had the Panthers' only hits. Rockridge's Amelia Thomas had two home runs and drove in three runs.
The Panthers (17-6) gave up four runs in the first and five in the second in the loss to Andrew. Central got an RBI single from Jesse Grawe and an RBI fielder's choice in the first, and a run-scoring sacrfice fly by Kennady Marlow in the second. Mady Wear hit an RBI double in the fourth, followed by an RBI single by Karlee Marlow and another sacrifice fly by Kennady Marlow.
Monmouth-Roseville 7, Southeastern 1: The Suns were held to five hits in the regular-season finale in Monmouth. The Titans (5-22) took a 2-0 lead before Southeastern's Denna Castlebury roped an RBI double in the fifth. Monmouth-Roseville pushed the lead back to two in the bottom half and tacked on four runs in the sixth. Castlebury had a pair of hits and an RBI.
NCCAA National Championships: Hannibal-LaGrange's Shelby Kallem placed third in the 10.000-meter at the NCCAA National Championships in Winona Lake, Ind. Kallem finished in 40 minutes, 46.54 seconds. The Trojans' Heiko Thiele placed fourth in the 10,000 meters on the men's side with a time of 33:44.27.
HLGU's Michael Casebolt place fifth in the 400 hurdles in 56.27. Simon Charunta placed sixth in the pole vault, and Alyssa Helmich placed seventh in the hammer throw. The HLGU men finished 17th out of 25 teams with 12 points, and the women placed 17th of out 21 with 10 points. Bethel won both the men's and women's team titles.
Vincennes 3, John Wood baseball 1: The Trail Blazers were swept in a three-game weekend series by Vincennes after being held to one run off six hits Saturday.
Jorge Valdes scored John Wood's first run off an error in the third, but Vincennes tied the game in the bottom of the inning when a run scored on a passed ball. Vincennes scored two runs in the seventh, and the Trail Blazers were held to one base runner in the bottom half of the inning.
