JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Two of the top eight girls distance runners in Class 2 reside in Northeast Missouri.
South Shelby senior Meredith O'Neal finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 12 minutes, 25.5 seconds Friday at the Class 2 state track and field championships at Adkins Stadium, while Clark County freshman Grace Buschling was eight in 12:26.21.
The distance relay teams held their own, too.
The Clark County 4x800 relay team of Buschling, Madelyn Johnson, Jade Ross and Madison Kauth finished second in 10 minutes, 13.02 seconds. The Monroe City team of Bailey Hays, Cearia Wardlow, Hannah Wheeler and Emmalee Williams took third in 10:17.59.
Monroe City also had athletes earn medals on the first day.
Monroe City senior McKenzie West finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 122 feet, while Panthers junior Lila Yager finished fifth in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet.
Clark County freshman Alexis Ellison qualified for the finals in the 100 dash in 12.76 and the 200 in 25.99.
