MOUNT STERLING, Ill. -- The Unity softball team faced a manageable deficit after four innings.
It was too much to make up after the fifth inning.
Jacksonville Routt used a five-run frame to turn a two-run advantage into a seven-run cushion on the way to upsetting top-seeded Unity 8-3 in Friday's Class 1A Brown County Regional championship game.
Two errors in the frame doomed the Mustangs (16-10).
A fielding error on a ground ball gave the Rockets runners on the corners, and two straight fielder's choices make it a 6-1 game. After a strikeout, Unity committed another error that allowed two more runs to score.
Only the first run of the frame came on a base hit.
The Mustangs answered with two runs in the fifth after Jamie Ellerman had an RBI single and Krista Schrader drove in a run on a groundout.
Unity was retired in order in the sixth, and a double play in the seventh ended the game.
Unity had 10 hits. Routt had just five as Unity committed six errors.
The Mustangs' Addison Miller had 10 strikeouts across seven innings in the circle.
