WINFIELD, Mo. -- The first two batters for St. Dominic were retired in the bottom of the first inning.
The third out didn't come for a while, and by then the damage was done.
The Hannibal baseball team fell into a 5-0 hole after the first inning and couldn't recover in an 8-0 loss to top-seeded St. Dominic in Friday's Class 4 District 8 championship game.
Second-seeded Hannibal (8-15) committed two errors after the first two outs, and a pair of singles made it 2-0. A walk set up a bases-clearing double that gave the Crusaders a 5-0 advantage.
St. Dominic (20-8) pushed the lead to 8-0 after scoring three runs in the fourth.
Hannibal didn't get another base runner until a one-out single by Adam Baxter in the top of the fifth. An error gave the Pirates two on with one out, but a popout and a strikeout ended the threat. Hannibal had two on with one out again in the sixth, but again couldn't score.
Lawson Rickey's two-run double in the seventh scored Hannibal's only runs.
Hannibal had just four hits, and Baxter had two of those.
