JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- The Calhoun softball team's pitching has been consistently dominant in the postseason in recent years.
Sydney Baalman is simply the latest to mow teams down.
Baalman threw a five-hit shutout while striking out 16 in a 7-0 victory over Payson Seymour in Wednesday's Class 1A Jacksonville Routt Sectional semifinals.
"(Baalman) is just a tough pitcher," Payson coach Lisa Schwartz said. "She threw that riseball a lot, and we couldn't lay off of it. And you expect that. It seems like a Baalman is always coming up."
Nine of the first 10 Indians retired were fanned. Baalman struck out the side in the first, third and fifth innings. Payson (16-5) got a one-out hit by Jairyn Hinthorne in the bottom of the first, but didn't have another hit until Livia Perry's one-out double in the third.
Payson pitcher Tori Schieferdecker kept pace with Baalman until a Mackenzie Cranmer two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.
"It was a real momentum change when (Cranmer) hit that," Schwartz said "You could just feel the shift. Our girls got kind of down, and it was tough to come back especially when (Baalman) is so dominant in the circle."
The Warriors (28-4) added two runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to pad the lead. Calhoun banged out 10 hits.
Hinthorne had two of Payson's five hits.
