BRIMFIELD, Ill. -- The situation was ripe for a rally.

The Quincy Notre Dame softball team just couldn't get the hit needed to sustain it.

Trailing Tremont by three runs in the top of the fourth inning Wednesday in the Class 2A Brimfield Sectional semifinals, the Raiders loaded the bases with one out and got one run home. However, a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.

The Turks responded by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the inning and ending the Raiders' season with a 10-2 victory.

"We needed to make the most out of that situation," QND coach Eric Orne said. "If you score a couple more runs and erase that deficit, you make them grip the bat a little tighter and make them a little more tense."

As it turned out, Tremont stayed loose.

Six of the runs in the pivotal fourth inning were scored with two outs, and the Turks retired 11 of the final 14 Raiders hitters.

"They simply played a higher caliber of softball," said Orne, whose team finishes with a 25-8 record.

Tremont grabbed the lead in the first as McAllister led off with a double and went to third on Hannah Nguyen's one-out single to center field. She scored on Hillary Mason's groundout.

The Turks (19-4) tacked on two runs in the second. With a runner on first and two outs, McAllister walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Abigail Getz delivered an RBI single through the left side of the infield. A walk to Nguyen loaded the bases, and McAllister scored when Mason reached on an error.

QND began to chisel away at the deficit in the fourth. Kailey Wall led off by reaching on an error before Eryn Cornwell and Keegan Wall both walked to load the bases. One out later, Kassidy Kenning singled to right field to plate a run. However, the next two batters struck out to strand the bases loaded.

"We weren't aggressive on the basepaths and didn't force the issue," Orne said.

Tremont made that hurt by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Six of those runs came with two outs, a stretch that featured three consecutive RBI singles.

"If you get out of that inning, at least you're still in the game," Orne said. "We couldn't finish the inning."

Cornwell added an RBI double in the fifth. Kenning went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

"As a young team learned, we need to work to get to reach that next level," Orne said. "We took a big stride and we saw what it's going to require to take another big stride."
