CHICAGO -- The way Greysen Arns and Blake Hayden played Thursday, Quincy High School boys tennis coach Mike Terry believes their 1-2 record at the Class 2A state tournament easily could have been reversed or better.
"All of those were winnable matches," Terry said. "That's how well they played and how good the competition was. They were in every match."
That was right to the bitter end.
The Blue Devils were eliminated with a 6-2, 3-6 (10-7) loss to Charlie Johanns and Patrick Johnson of LaGrange Lyons in the second round of the consolation bracket. The tiebreaker was knotted at 6 before the Lyons duo won four of the final five points.
"Grey and Blake played a great second set," Terry said. "They really hung in there."
The state tournament started with a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Chicago Latin's Will Benford and Pierce Rutledge before rebounding with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Crystal Lake Central's Jared Otlewis and Luke Reupert.
"They had a very nice run at the end when it mattered most," Terry said. "I'm proud of the way they played."
