CHARLESTON, Ill. -- Miles Sheppard was surrounded by nothing but seniors, and the West Hancock freshman distance runner didn't look or feel out of place.

Sheppard finished third in the 3,200-meter run in 9 minutes, 40.9 seconds at the Class 1A boys state track and field championships Saturday at O'Brien Stadium on the Eastern Illinois University campus. The other four runners in the top five were all seniors.

Sheppard won one of three medals taken by area athletes Saturday.

The Central 4x200 relay team of Aveory Lamanske, Levi Hecox, Brandon Rossmiller and Chayse Houston finished seventh in 1:31.33 to earn a medal. Illini West's Ty Jackson finished seventh in the discus with a toss of 158 feet, 2 inches.

The Chargers' 4x800 team of Matt Peacock, Cole Kirkham, Matt McDowell and Eli Newton finished 11th in 8:16.48, missing a medal by two spots.
