QUINCY -- The Hannibal Hoots are learning to take advantage of every mistake an opponent makes.

The Quincy Gems made too many to overcome Sunday night.

The Hoots doubled their run total by scoring three unearned runs off three errors in the middle innings and got an almost three-inning save from right-hander Parker Heidorf to cement a 6-4 Prospect League victory at QU Stadium.

The Gems closed within 6-3 in the seventh when Hoots reliever Derek Boben walked the bases loaded with one out.

Heidorf was summoned from the bullpen and uncorked three straight balls, the second of which was a wild pitch that allowed a run to score. He collected himself and got Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli to ground out and Kyle Crowl to strike out to end the threat.

Heidorf retired six of the next eight batters he faced for his first save of the summer.

Hannibal built its lead with a combination of power and persistence.

The three-run fourth inning featured a solo home run from Kyle Kent and a two-run shot from Brett Zimmerman with a double by Connor Manthey sandwiched between them.

In the fifth, the Hoots' Diego Munoz led off with a single, took second on an error and scored an unearned run on a two-out single by Manthey. In the seventh, a dropped third strike, an error, a wild pitch, two walks and another error led to two unearned runs for Hannibal.

The Gems tried to rally, scoring two runs in the sixth by taking advantage of a leadoff single and walk and added a run on a wild pitch in the seventh, but they ended up leaving nine runners on base.

Manthey and Nathan Kuhn had two hits apiece for the Hoots, while five of the Gems' six hits were singles.

Hannibal left-hander Kyle Rosenfeld (2-0) earned the victory with five scoreless innings in his second start of the summer.
