Vandalia man dies in Ralls County crash

NEW LONDON, Mo. -- A Vandalia man died in a Friday afternoon crash that also injured four members of an Iowa family.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said that a 1999 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Henry H. Gerdes, 83, of Vandalia, was traveling west, crossing northbound U.S. 61 at Route A in New London at 1:25 p.m., and pulled into the path of a northbound 2014 Ford F-350 driven by Bryce C. Rasmusson, 37, of Jesup, Iowa.

Rasmusson and his passengers, his wife, Heather M. Rasmusson, 36, daughter Madison C. Rasmusson, 9, and son Riley C. Rasmusson, 6, all of Jesup, were taken by Ralls County Ambulance to Hannibal Regional Hospital with minor injuries. The patrol said all were wearing seat belts.

Gerdes, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead by Ralls County Coroner Robert VanWinkle at 2:05 p.m. Gerdes was taken to O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal.

The patrol was assisted by the Ralls County Sheriff's Department, New London Police Department, Ralls County EMS and Ralls County Fire.
