Woman dies, man injured in Mount Sterling shooting

MOUNT STERLING, Ill. -- An investigation continues in a Friday night shooting in Mount Sterling that left a woman dead and a man injured.

Mount Sterling Police and the Brown County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 400 block of East Chestnut about 9:20 p.m.

Officers found a dead woman, later identified as Rebecca L. Niewohner, 44, of Mount Sterling, and a man, later identified as John M. Dean, 39, of Mount Sterling, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the face.

Preliminary autopsy results say Niewohner died of a gunshot wound. A toxicology report is pending.

Dean was taken to Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville before being transferred to Springfield, where he remains in intensive care for injuries sustained from a gunshot wound.

The Illinois State Police is assisting the Mount Sterling Police Department in the investigation.
